Birch and pine had overwhelmed this part of the Common which at one time had been heathland. However remnants of the heath remained and it was hoped that by clearing these might re-establish.
While much of the brash was burnt, for what does the typical conservation volunteer enjoy more than a good bonfire, a number of log piles where created to provide habitat.
