Our first coppicing task of the autumn.
The plot proved to contain less hazel than anticipated and much of the day was taken up starting to construct a dead hedge to protect the coppiced stools from deer damage as well as taking out some larger trees, willow and sweet chestnut in particular, which were overshadowing the plot.
Taking out a larger tree can be a bit tricky .....
..... and with an audience on hand to appraise your work .....
..... even embarrassing.
