On a task at Paices Wood in early June layering hazel in the hope of increasing the density of the stools in the coppice plot, John discovered this Greater Spotted Woodpecker fledgling that had possibly left its nest slightly sooner than advisable.

Fortunately its parents were aware of its whereabouts and were feeding it so it may survive although the cool, damp conditions did not bode well.
